Nostalgia for the Old Days

I'm sure many of you put the backpack high on your list of daily traditions to be grateful you don't have to endure, once you graduated from your school girl days (it's up there with shower flip-flops, 8am classes, all-nighters for end of term papers, and your twitchy, awkward RA). I have to say, though, if it weren't for the trauma of wearing 40 pounds worth of textbooks to school everyday combined with the fact that you can dress your North Face down, but you can't wear it with stilettos, I would have actually continued to include a backpack in my wardrobe; especially if said backpack looked like this:

Tan Leather Rucksack, $118.36 (via ASOS.com)

Warm chestnut color, plush leather, understated and classy pocket and zipper accents. I'm in love, aren't you? It makes me want to return to academia; although nothing will ever cause me to long for my high school days...*shudder*

Bowler Bags...A Personal Favorite

I love bowler bags, because they're the perfect multi-purpose bag. One day, they can be an ultra chic gym bag, another day, a great "the-weather-jumps-from-winter-to-summer-so-I-have-to-bring-layers" day bag, and another day, it could be the ultimate weekender for a trip upstate.

For those of you who like to travel light, and the prospect of carrying a bag that has ample room for more than your keys, wallet and phone makes your back hurt, the bowler is a "green option" for those shopping days: opt not to carry your multi-purchases in the store's plastic or paper, in favor of your own shopping portable.

So, as you can see, anyone can benefit from a bowler. They're just that cool.

Tell Me Something...

Why is it that Suri, whose age does not take up all the fingers in her pretty, nail polished little hand, is a fierce fashion icon, while her mother...is not?

Case in point:

Perhaps where Katie is concerned, I would enjoy all the things she's wearing separately with different ensembles, but together they make her look like she got dressed in the dark.

However, Suri's get-up...I'd wear it. C'mon! The flowy cream empire waist dress, the black patent ballerinas with knee-highs...the arabian silk/satin olive/apple bag...

So I started thinking...

Is it possible that fashion has slowly been taking cues from Celebrity CHILDREN?
Or is Suri that much of a natural?

Hmmm....

Another Fashion Secret You're Now Privy To (thank me after your wallet empties...!)

I. LOVE. This. Website.

Mostly because for every girl who dreams of a fantastic wardrobe but has peanuts for a bank account wishes there were a place she could go to that could always satisfy her craving, and this, my lovelies, is it!

Easy to navigate, this website boasts a separate mainstore AND outlet clothing category. That's right, you can shop on this website for their own brand, and for designer brands. But don't scoff at the first option - their styles (and prices) are TOTALLY fierce!

They have a small but lively collection of beauty supplies, too - and with brands hailing not only from the States but from the UK as well (anyone who has been to Boots Pharmacy will squeal in delight), you have some pretty wonderful, off-the-beaten-path options for your powder room basics.

I could just gush on and on, but I won't waste anymore time. Go, and you'll never look back!

Le Chaton Noir's Top 5 Spring Must Haves!

I've been flipping to every magazine's spring trend articles in search for the hottest trends, to find that I either converge wholeheartedly and have already made some a staple in my wardrobe, or, well...*wrinkles nose*.

Fair enough - I will divy to you what I intend to make a part of my fling with Spring!

She loves me #5: Nude

I love nude, because it's a neutral color that can be as provocative as black when used as a main color, but it's lighter, spritelier, and has a dancer's grace to it. Pairing with crimson (like a dramatic red lip, for instance) is a fantastic tried-and-true, but I would also try neon orange, yellow or green (like Valentino did here) as
accents for a more poppy, springy feel. I've been experimenting with amber shades for lipstick as well - if applied carefully, it can have the same effect for olive skin that a bubblegum pink has for lighter, cooler skin tones.

Zara has become the go-to shop for hues and shoes as far as I'm concerned. I currently own four pairs of shoes from them and wear them all as if their the only pairs of shoes I own! Zara has some great nude items, including some skin tight leggings ($39.90) that are divine with boots, and some nud-ish/blush-ish leather ballet flats ($29.90). Another great place for nude is Forever 21, which lately has an assortment of tees and dresses in the shade.

Forget Me Not #4: Military-inspiration

If you tend to shy away from this trend for its masculine vibe, I ask you to re-consider - the military trend has
endured several seasons on the runway, and despite the androgynous look it aimed for a couple of years ago (which I totally love, as well) designers like the late
Alexander McQueen are pairing menswear with curve-conscious, drap-ey feminine touches which are translating to more flattering silhouettes.

Khaki and Olive are my favorite colors for warm-weather wear, especially as a hue coupled with military-inspired details (pockets, buttons, etc). Apparently, slouchy military jackets are in, but I would opt for a slouchy shirt-dress alternative รก la Gap (pictured left, $39) or Asos, which would allow you to experiment with fabrics and accessories to soften the look - go for linen or silk, or pair with a braided belt that hugs the waist to give the dress more contour.

Sweet Surrender # 3: Lingerie Peek-A Boo
Not for the faint at heart or ample at bosom, this trend is a do if you dare. I happen
to think that it is an extremely sensual "summ'n-summ'n" to add allure to a blazer, or provide texture and coverage to a sheer or loose fitting shirt. Wearing a slip as a dress looks tacky to me, but the little lace from a camisole/bra, especially in a punchy color opposite your skin tone (cool tones like limes and ceruleans for olive complexion, peaches and red-oranges for blue undertones) that will add just the right amount of ooh la la. To make sure you don't over-expose, you should just be able to see the lining, detailing or strap, nothing more (that'd be more of a flash than a peek). Victoria knows how to keep her secret! (pictured here, $38)

Puppy Love # 2: Rompers

I recently purchased a floral romper from Charlotte Russe that I am in love with, (pictured right, $26) since it hugs and poofs at exactly the right places. They also have something similar in gray and lavender which I think is so sweet! I love the combo of rompers and florals, especially with a corset bodice, but a hooded or strapless fit can work, too ( stripes and colorful digi-prints are other options). I like to pair rompers with a fitted, peplum blazer and oxfords or ballet flats. If you do go with a print, don't go too accessory happy, though -- the print does a lot for the ensemble.

April Showers # 1: Bright Colored Rainwear

I find wearing black and beige for rain gear gets a little boring - so I harnessed my inner child and went all out on fun raingear, from bright yellow rainboots to an apple red trench. I even purchased a clear plastic umbrella with bright color dotted accents via Amazon (pictured below; the round, bubble-shaped top is great for resisting windy rain), and now I feel more excited than ever for those wet days! Bring it, puddles! :)

Listen up, shorties!

So, for those looking to either update or create a solid work wardrobe with a limited budget, I highly recommend you try NY & Company, which is having a holiday sale now through Sunday. However, as per my experience, it is actually cheaper to shop online than in-store; they are also offering free shipping on orders over $65 (code 1254). I love to shop there for work basics because their fabrics are uber-comfy, form-fitting, and as someone who's teetering on the short side (I'm 5'4 and a 1/2") their "petite" sizes fit right where they're supposed to, as opposed to many brands where the shorter hems sit a bit high on the leg (Old Navy's short sizes run too short for me and their regulars tend to be the slightest bit long, otherwise they tend to have good sales), which means you don't have to spend extra on tailoring! I'm lucky that the cut is just long enough to look good with heels, but allows me to also wear flats without stepping on extra fabric. You shorter women know what I'm talking about! I love this suitpant take on a "denim" inspired pant, definitely something you can dress up or down.
